CHAPTER EIGHT

When Jenny brought Jamie downstairs the next morning, the living room was empty. It was still early, but most mornings Jared had already had the coffee on and was reading the interminable reports his printer seemed to spit out with great regularity.

Thankfully, he hadn't made an appearance yet this morning, so she prepared Jamie's bottle and took her out into the cool morning air. She sat in the rocker and tried to remember all the opening gambits she’d rehearsed last night for when she next saw Jared. She would be friendly, cordial. But cool. Definitely in control. That was a must.

If he brought up the subject, she'd say she wasn't looking for an affair. She’d do her job and leave when the time came with no complications. They had nothing in common and it would make more sense to keep their personal lives separate.

She hoped she could pull it off. If he gave her that lopsided smile, her insides would melt and she’d be tempted to throw caution to the wind and see if she could change his mind about things.

She gazed at Jamie. "You're lucky. For now you only have to worry about getting fed and bathed and changed. And I'll take good care of you. Wait until you grow up and face all the problems that are thrown at you." Cuddling her closer, she smiled at the infant, wishing for a moment that she, too, had no worries beyond when to eat or when to bathe.

Jamie watched her from her dark eyes, never letting her gaze stray.

"You're filling out a bit, I think, sweetie. You look like you've gained a little weight. We need to find a doctor and see how big you are."

Jenny relished the closeness of the baby, the utter trust Jamie placed in her to take care of her needs. She was close to falling so in love with this little girl. She already knew she’d be crushed when they had to part.

Jenny pushed the thought away. She'd known coming into the job that any relationship with the baby was strictly temporary. Instead, she tried to ignore the coming separation and focused her attention on how to prepare her classroom for the fall. Mentally listing the things she needed to do before school started. But between enjoying Jamie and listening for Jared, she couldn't hold a single thought of the future. She was too much a part of the present.

Long after the baby finished eating, Jenny continued to rock her. She'd start breakfast when she heard Jared. Now, she was content to avoid their first meeting.

She carried Jamie around the balcony so she could see each flower. Tickling her cheeks with the soft blossoms, she laughed when the baby batted them with her flailing hands. The bright reds and pinks caught the baby’s attention and she’d try to reach for them.

"One day your eye-hand coordination will work," Jenny said with a soft giggle. Then she snatched Jamie close and kissed her cheek. "And where will you be then, I wonder?"

"With parents who love her," Jared said from the doorway.
